 Christmas came early for Irenea Escutin as she was named the 1 millionth Postal ID cardholder by the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost). To celebrate the milestone of reaching over a million cardholders, Escutin received a goody bag containing Postal ID (PID) product merchandise, a home appliance from one of the PID merchant-partners and PhP 3,000 worth of gift checks from PHLPost. Said gifts were personally presented to a teary Escutin at the store where she works in Camarin, Caloocan City on November 16, 2016.
Escutin spends her day looking after a sari sari store owned by the employer of her husband, Ruel Escutin, a driver. The couple has two daughters of 16 and 14 years old. They moved to Caloocan from Las Pinas back in 2001. According to Escutin, the need for a valid ID nowadays is inevitable. She claims that the Postal ID is the easiest card for her to avail as it has no employment, skill or age requirement. “When someone wires money through remittance centers, or when facilitating transactions in banks, the Postal ID is one of the identification cards they ask for”, Escutin said in Filipino. Escutin started to faithfully apply for the ID in 2002. Back then, PHLPost was still issuing the paper-based ID. The issuance of the digitized Improved Postal ID proved to be very useful to Escutin who has no other means to avail a valid ID. “I am extremely grateful to PHLPost, not just for the gifts, but also for the practicality of the Postal ID”, Escutin stated. Escutin was also thankful for the simple process she had to undertake to avail the ID. She was merely asked to submit her birth certificate, marriage contract to validate her married name, and barangay clearance. “It took only about two (2) weeks before my ID was delivered“, Escutin added. The Philippine Postal Corporation started issuing the Improved Postal ID on May 16, 2016. This new, digitized ID was infused with multi-level security features that protect a cardholder’s identity and counter fraudulent transactions. The Improved Postal ID also provides cardholders with much-coveted access as a primary form of identification to key institutions such as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and all institutions supervised by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). All Filipinos living in the country or abroad may apply for the Postal ID in any of the 1,300 post offices nationwide.
